Felix Boafo

My dream was made possible by the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC)(Felix Boafo)

As a teaching assistant from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology preparing for a Master’s degree, I was keen on an education and work experience that will provide requisite knowledge and skills to contribute to development in my home country, Ghana. Thus, when I was enrolled as a master’s degree student at Hohai University (China), studying Engineering Mechanics, I was eager to come back home after my studies and work in a capable role that also had a social focus.

This dream was made possible by the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). On September 16 2016, the representative of CHEC and Ghana Meridian Port Services Limited (MPS) signed the master contract for Ghana Tema New Container Terminal Project. The project was commenced by the then-president His Excellency John Dramani Mahama on 16th November 2016, and is expected to change the form of Ghana’s shipping industry in the next 100 years. It provides over 1000 jobs directly and 4000 jobs in related industries. I’m very lucky to be one of the beneficiaries.

From their welcoming staff who handle campus recruitment to the workplace environment, CHEC has been consistent in its dedication to providing new graduates like myself the opportunity to learn and grow with them.

Transitioning into the world of work after school can be somewhat challenging, but with the assistance of the receptive HR and recruiting team, I was able to easily navigate my way into the company in 2017. After an interaction with two Quality Control Engineers (Mr. Gong and Mr. Paul Eldhose) on the Tema Port Expansion Project, I realized CHEC pursued projects that resonated with my vision – I was in the right place.

Getting the chance to build an engineering career cannot be taken likely and building one with CHEC, a Global Fortune 500 subsidiary and one of the largest full service engineering companies, cannot be overstated. I am fortunate to be part of the Quality control team of the Tema Port Expansion Project where I currently work as a Quality Control Engineer performing supervisory roles for the Accropode precast yard. Being a part of this team for the past six months has been equally challenging and yet rewarding. The daily target of making sure each Accropode produced is up to standard and the task of designing innovative alternatives for better production has been mentally stimulating and makes for an exciting job role.

Aside the steep learning curve to improve my technical competence, CHEC has continuously provided the opportunity for me to hone my soft skills. I have had the chance to work on several parts of the projects with teams from different parts of the world such as AECOM Engineers giving me a cross cultural working experience.

The day to day work culture is very open, inclusive and results oriented; the staff are friendly and always ready to assist. With the open door policy, it is easy to share your grievances with your superiors with the reassurance that it will be considered. Aside that, CHEC is truly invested in the welfare of its employees. They care about our safety and well-being and put adequate measures in place on same.

Being part of the Quality Assurance and Quality Control team and the bigger CHEC family is an opportunity that I am truly grateful for. As a young engineer, I have already gained much knowledge working with the team of expert engineers and consultants.

China Harbour Engineering Company is dedicated to building a closer world and I am thankful to be part of the team making this possible. Like the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, said during his visit to the site on November 6, 2017.  “This project will make Ghana have a modern wharf world-class level in the near future, which is very beneficial for the rapid development of Ghana; I will support every item development of the project.”
